5. APPLICATION:
Handling/Storage/Shipping: Care must be exercised in handling. Multicolor paint is fragile. Do not freeze or store over 100ºF. Close container tightly after each use. If container is not full, skinning can occur.
Do not store in unlined metal containers.
Surface Preparation and Priming: Surface must be clean, dry, flat and without defects. Prime with appropriate primer/sealer/stain-killer required forsurface to be painted. Follow primer manu-facturer's instructions for use. Use premium quality primer having good holdout and tooth. For hard, smooth surfaces, specific high performance primers are recommended. Undercoats that contain shellac, wax, silicones or stearates may not be suitable. When in doubt, check intercoat adhesion between primer and multicolor topcoat prior to proceeding with application. Do not prime with flat wall paint. Textured surfaces must be filled and primed. Pattern size will appear smaller and square footage per gallon will be less over textured surfaces.
Tinting: Colorspec Tintable Multicolor is intended to be tinted with universal colorants used in architectural coatings.
Use quart tint formula per gallon of Colorspec to create colors which approximate architectural colors. Colorspec is intended for use withlight and midtone colors only – deep tones or heavily pigmented colors tend to obscure flecks in Colorspec multicolor. Do not exceed one ounce of colorant per gallon of Colorspec . Always produce sample sprayout for approval by specifier prior to tinting entire batch. Always box all paint for the specific project before use.
Mixing: When tint paste is added to multicolor, agitate on a Gyroscopic Mixer for one minute. Note: Do Not Exceed Three Minutes. Multicolor paint is fragile. Vigorous agitation may break down color flecks and change color. If tinted Colorspec has been stored for a period of time, box or stir gently with a
paint paddle.
|
Reduction: When necessary, add water gradually in small increments (3 to 4 liquid ounces per addition not to exceed 5% in total) until an acceptable spray pattern is achieved. Too much water will cause the paint to sag. (Do not add thinners, reducers or solvents.)
Equipment: Colorspec is designed to be applied with specific HVLP and conventional dual-regulated air spray equipment. NOTE: regulated pressure pot. Do not use airless spray equipment. Color standard sprayouts are sprayed with Binks Mach I, tip 97AS with ASME dual-regulated pressure pot, Spray TECH CS9100, or CS10,000 with #5 or #6 tip set and pressure pot hook up and Titan Profinish with pressure pot hookup with .073 needle/nozzle set and #3 air cap. With conventional air spray equipment use Binks External Mix Nozzle Assembly Gun 2001, air nozzle #66SK, fluid nozzle 66, needle valve 565. Use an ASME dual-regulated pressure pot. Do not use #200 internal mix aircap for conventional ( Binks 2001) spray gun. Do not use airless spray equipment. For industrial applica-tion use Binks external mix nozzle assembly. Gun 2001, Air cap 66 P.D., fluid tip 66, needle valve 565. Use an ASME dual-regulated pressure pot (adjust air pressure and material pressure for desired results) See “Spray Equipment Guidelines”
Other H.V.L.P. or conventional spray equipment may be used. For specific recommendations contact equipment manufacturer or sales representative
Application Guidelines:
Final finish may vary from standard due to variations in paint, equipment, pressure settings, technique and substrate.
Note: Application must be full coat coverage. Follow our application technique. If Colorspec is not properly applied the following will occur:
- Uneven Appearance
- Picture Framing
- Lap Marks
- Unsatisfactory Touchup
Always evaluate color, pattern, and paint delivery rate on mock-up test area while using specific batch of paint with equipment selected for project, and be certain mock-up meets with the approval of specifier prior to beginning project. Color standards and film properties can only be attained when application is full coat coverage. Follow equipment manufacturer's instructions for use and maintenance of equipment. Observe all warning statements relating to both paint and equipment.
- Avoid application during periods of high humidity and/or when temperature of paint surface or air is below 60ºF or above 100ºF.
- Remove all filters and strainers from spray equipment.
- Do not use pressure pot agitator, siphon-type or gravity feed guns or
airless spray equipment.
- Use paint with same batch number for specific job. There may be slight
differences between batches.
|
Application Technique: Set material and air pressure to match approved sprayout. Apply tack coat to facilitate application. Maintain uniform-distance of 18" - 24" between the gun and surface. Aim spray gun directly at surface (spraying at an angle will distort pattern). Spray, overlapping each previous stroke by 50% and crosshatch the same area with vertical strokes to eliminate an coverage. Spray an area comfortable to reach.
Topcoating: Not necessary in most
applications. Can be topcoated to
increase gloss and/or improve properties.
Touchup: Patch and/or prime as
necessary. Select spray equipment and
tip size and adjust pressure settings to
be used. Do a mock-up to match
original finish.
- For small areas: Apply multicolor lightly as a spattercoat, inspect and continue to spatter area until same coverage is achieved as the adjacent painted area. Feather out as necessary to blend in.
- For large areas: Corner-to-corner touchup is recommended using the same application technique and equipment setup as used in original application.
- Note: In areas with clear topcoat, degloss and/or prime before repainting, using multicolor followed by clear topcoat.
Cleanup: Flush equipment thoroughly with water.
Precautions: DO NOT BREATHE SPRAY MIST. Avoid breathing dustwhen sanding. Wear an appropriate respirator (NIOSH/MSHA Approved), safety goggles and gloves. Use adequate ventilation. DO NOT TAKE INTERNALLY. KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN. HMIS Rating: Health 1; Flammability 0; Reactivity 0; Personal Protection I.
