5. APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Handling/Storage/Shipping: Care must be exercised in handling. Paint should be poured gently back and forth between two containers (boxed) or stirred gently with paddle without touching sides or bottom of container, until color flecks are thoroughly mixed. Do not mix mechanically. Vigorous agitation may break down color flecks and change color. Do not freeze or store at over 100ºF. Close container tightly after each use. Do not store in unlined metal containers.
Surface Preparation and Priming: Surface must be clean, dry, flat and without defects. Prime with appropriate top quality primer/sealer/stain killer required for surface to be painted. Follow primer manufacturer’s instructions for use. For most applications, use premium quality primer having good holdout and tooth. Do not prime with flat wall paint. For hard, smooth surfaces, specific high performance primers are recommended. Undercoats that contain shellac, wax, silicones or stearates may not be suitable. When in doubt, check intercoat adhesion between primer and multicolor topcoat prior to proceeding with application. MULTISPEC FINE FLECK will discolor when exposed to highly alkaline materials such as cement, mortar and plaster. Such surfaces must be properly prepared and sealed to protect the multicolor topcoat. Textured surfaces must be filled and primed. Pattern size will appear smaller over textured surfaces.
Reduction: None necessary. Supplied ready to spray with most professional airless spray equipment. For application with HVLP spray equipment, reduction may be necessary. Do not add thinners, reducers or solvents which will destroy colors. If thinning is required, water should be added gradually in small increments (not more than 10%) until an acceptable spray pattern is achieved. Too much water will cause paint to sag.
Equipment Summary: MULTISPEC FINE FLECK was specifically designed for application with labor saving airless spray equipment which has excellent low pressure control with a minimal deadband (pressure variation). It can also be applied in a slower application by conventional air spray with dual-regulated pressure pot or cup and High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) spray units. However, appearance of finish may vary depending on equipment used.
A. Airless Equipment:
• Pumps: For use with most professional airless spray equipment having variable pressure feed and good low pressure control at 500-800 psi. Units with electronic pressure control and/or diaphragm pumps generally provide best results, delivering paint consistently at low recommended pressure settings (less likely to break down flecks).
• Spray Tips: Use a self-cleaning reversible fan tip .517 to .525. The greater the airless pump output the larger the spray tip orifice size required. Match airless pump pressure and tip size for desired results.
|
• Pump Pressure: Use lowest pressure necessary to achieve acceptable fleck pattern and color appearance with selected spray equipment for the job. Spray at 500-800 psi for best results (stall pressure). With smaller pumps spray at 500 psi and with larger pumps spray at approximately 800 psi. Pump pressure settingsmust be coordinated with tip size in order to deliver proper fleck pattern and color appearance. MSI strongly recommends the use of a fluid filled pressure gauge on the pump in order to monitor the pressure setting.
• Fluid Hose: Use a minimum of 1/4" diameter hose with a length of 25 to 100 feet depending on size of airless pump selected. The larger the pump the longer and larger diameter of hose. Generally 50 ft. of 1/4" or 3/8" hose should be utilized.
B. Air Spray Equipment : Use spraygun with an internal mix nozzle assembly as specified by spray equipment manufacturer for use with multicolor paint. Use an ASME rated dual-regulated pressure pot and compressor delivering consistent CFM to match spraygun’s capacity. Can also be applied with an external mix nozzle assembly for industrial applications.
C. High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) Spray Equipment: Use large orifice fan tip. For specific recommendations, contact equipment dealer or manufacturer.
Application Guidelines: Final finish may vary from standard due to variations in paint, equipment, pressures and technique. Always evaluate color, pattern and paint delivery rate on mock-up test area while using specific batch of paint with equipment selected for job and be certain that mock-up meets with the approval of specifier prior to beginning job. Once approved, the mock-up should serve as the standard for the job. Color standards and film properties can only be attained when application is full coat coverage.
·Apply material when temperature of paint, surface and air are between 60º - 100ºF.
·Avoid application during periods of high humidity.
• Remove all filters and strainers from pump, gun and siphon tube.
• Do not use mechanical paint shakers, box multicolor from container to container.
• Do not use pressure pot agitator or siphon type or gravity feed guns.
• Adjust pressure settings predicated on equipment and job condition.
• Follow equipment manufacturer’s instructions for use and maintenance of equipment. Observe all warning statements relating to both paint and equipment.
One-Step Application Technique: Set pressure(s) to match approved sample. Maintain uniform distance of approximately 18-36" between the gun and surface. Distance will vary depending on pressure used: the greater the pressure the further from surface. Aim spraygun directly at surface (spraying at an angle will distort pattern). Spray horizontal strokes, overlapping each previous stroke by 50%. Then crosshatch in the same manner with vertical strokes to eliminate any lap marks. Use straight uniform strokes and spray at a constant speed low enough to achieve full coat coverage but fast enough to avoid sagging. When applying close to surface, more paint is applied and faster spray strokes are required to avoid excess paint buildup and sagging. Begin spray stroke before triggering and release trigger before stroke is completed.
Topcoating: In high traffic areas and on surfaces subjected to repeated handling like doors, furniture and kitchen cabinets, topcoating with MULTISPEC MCT clear waterborne acrylic polyurethane is recommended.
|
This Multipurpose Clear Topcoat helps protect the multicolor paint from soil, cleaning compounds, oils and other contaminants while also making it easier to clean surface. MULTISPEC FINE FLECK can be damaged by solvents, plasticizers or corrosives. When such exposures are expected, protect by topcoating with a suitable high performance protective clear topcoat. Check for topcoat compatibility and intercoat adhesion.
Touchup: Patch and/or prime as necessary. Select spray equipment and tip size and adjust pressure settings to be used. Do a mock-up to match original finish.
1. For small areas: Apply multicolor lightly as a spattercoat, inspect and continue to spatter area until same coverage is achieved as the adjacent painted area. Feather out as necessary to blend in.
2. For large areas: Corner-to-corner touchup is recommended using the same application technique and equipment setup as used in original application.
3. NOTE: In areas topcoated with clear, degloss and/or prime before repainting, using multicolor followed by clear topcoat.
Cleanup: Flush equipment with water followed by mineral spirits or flush new multicolor dedicated hoses with lacquer thinner.
Precautions: Danger! Combustible. Contains petroleum distillate. Keep away from heat, sparks and flame. Use with adequate ventilation. To avoid breathing vapor or spray mist, open windows and doors or use other means to ensure fresh air entry during application and drying. Wear respiratory protection (NIOSH/MSHA respirator). Close container after each use. Avoid contact with eyes or skin. Inhalation: May cause nose and throat irritation. If affected by inhalation of vapor or spray mist move to ventilated area. Eye Contact: May cause eye irritation. In case of eye contact, flush immediately with plenty of water and get medical attention. Skin contact: May cause skin irritation. In case of skin contact, wash with soap and water. Ingestion (swallowing): If swallowed, do not induce vomiting. Get medical attention immediately. Keep Out of Reach of Children. Keep from freezing.
