APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Ultrafine Tintable Multicolor has it's own unique characteristics which differentiate it from other types of multicolor paint. This technical bulletin is intended to highlight these differences. By following these instructions, your customer can achieve a trouble free multicolor application.

STORAGE AND USE
Ultrafine is relatively fast drying (1-2 hours to touch). If skinning occurs during storage, carefully remove skins and, if necessary, filter the paint by pouring through a metal mesh filter which eliminates the skins. When necessary to thin or reduce multicolor, stir in water gradually in small increments (3 to 4 fluid ounces per addition, not to exceed 5% in total) until acceptable spray pattern is achieved. Too much water will cause paint to sag. Colorspec is also freezable and heat sensitive and must be protected.

TINTING,
Ultrafine bases can be tinted with most universal colorants intended for use with waterbased architectural coating. Use a quart tint formula per gallon of Ultrafine to create colors that approximate tint-color standards. Ultrafine is intended for use with light to midtone colors only – deep tones or heavily pigmented colors tend to obscure flecks. Do not exceed one ounce of colorant per gallon of Ultrafine base.

When colorant is added to multicolor, agitate on a gyroscopic mixer for one minute...not to exceed three minutes. Vigorous agitation may break down color flecks and change appearance of multicolor. Tinted Ultrafine that has been stored should always be stirred gently with a paint paddle prior to use.

Always get specifier approval of tinted Ultrafine sample prior to tinting entire order. Spray sample at full-coat coverage and let sample dry prior to seeking color approval. Tinted multicolor has a bluish milky cast when still wet. Always box or intermix multiple containers of Ultrafine after tinting, to assure color uniformity in all containers.

SURFACE PREPARATION AND PRIMING
Surface must be clean, dry, flat and without defects. Prime with appropriate primer/sealer/stainkiller required for surface to be painted. Use premium quality primer having good holdout and tooth. When in doubt, check intercoat adhesion between primer and multicolor topcoat prior to proceeding with application. Do not prime with flat wall paint.

SUGGESTED SPRAY EQUIPMENT
Ultrafine
was designed to be applied with airless spray equipment; and can be applied with conventional air spray equipment although fleck size will be larger. Sample spray-outs are sprayed with either a Graco 395 or Titan 440i airless units with a 519 spray tip @450-500 p.s.i. For specific equipment recommen-dations refer to Spray Equip-ment Guidelines and full specifications or contact Multispec representative or your local dealer.

SPRAY TECHNIQUE
Set material and air pressure to match approved sprayout. Gun air pressure and material pressure will vary depending on spray equipmentand batch of paint used.

Application Guidelines: Final finish may vary from standard due to variations in paint, substrate, equipment, pressure settings and technique. Note: Application must be full coat coverage. If not properly applied, the following will occur: uneven appearance, picture framing, lap marks, unsatisfactory touch up and diminished properties. Always evaluate color, pattern, and paint delivery rate on mock-up test area while using specific batch of paint with equipment selected for project, and be certain that mock-up meets with the approval of specifier prior to beginning project. Once approved, the mock-up should serve as the standard for the project. Color standards and film properties can only be attained when application is full coat coverage. Follow equipment manufacturer’s instructions for use and maintenance of equipment. Observe all warning statements relating to both paint and equipment.
• Avoid application during periods of high humidity and or when temperature of paint, surface or air is below 60º F or above 100º F.
• Apply tack coat to facilitate application, allow tack coat to flash prior to applying subsequent coats.
• Remove all filters and strainers from spray equipment.
• Do not use pressure pot agitator, siphon-type or gravity feed guns.
• Fast-drying paint may build up in the tip and reduce orifice size during spraying. Inspect and clean tip periodically.

One Step Application Technique: Set material and air pressure to match approved sprayout. Maintain uniform distance of 18-24” between the gun and surface. Aim spray gun directly at surface (spraying at an angle will distort pattern). Spray with horizontal strokes, overlapping each previous stroke by 50% and crosshatch the same area with vertical strokes to eliminate any lap marks and to achieve full coat coverage.
First, apply a tack coat to facilitate full-coat application. Maintain uniform distance of 18-24" between the gun and surface. Aim spray gun directly at surface (spraying at an angle will distort pattern). Spray horizontal strokes, overlapping each previous stroke by 50%, then crosshatch the same area with vertical strokes to eliminate any lap marks and to achieve full-coat coverage.

Finish may vary from standard due to variations in batch tinting, equipment, pressure settings, substrate and technique. Always evaluate color, pattern and paint delivery rate on mock-up test area while using specific batch of paint with equipment selected for job and be certain that mock-up meets with the approval of specifier prior to beginning job. Note: Printed literature will vary in color and pattern from actual Ultrafine sprayout samples. Make certain to purchase enough material of a given batch to complete the job.

FULL-COAT APPLICATION REQUIREMENT
Within
Ultrafine multicolor, individual color flecks are suspended in a clear water phase. In conventional untinted multicolors, the water phase is water clear. During spraying, the painter sees the flecks being deposited on the surface and changing the surfaces appearance during each spray stroke. Once full-coat coverage is achieved, additional spray strokes do not change the appearance of the finish.

With
Ultrafine, only the clear water phase is tinted. The tint colorants do not tint the flecks, but rather surround these flecks. When spraying tinted Ultrafine, the entire surface sprayed is colored during each spray stroke, even though the multicolored flecks are not covering the entire surface. This makes it more difficult to determine when full- coat coverage has been achieved. While a surface sprayed with less than full-coat coverage may look attractive, subsequent applications or touchups which put more flecks on the surface will be very noticeable, and will not blend in well with the surrounding area. Such surfaces will need additional coats of tinted Ultrafine to achieve a uniform, full-coat coverage application. To assure yourself of full-coat coverage, first do a mock-up area following our spray technique. Check application against a sprayout standard for color and pattern. Once approved, the mock-up test area can serve as the standard for the job.

TROUBLESHOOTING
If
Colorspec is not properly applied, the following will occur:

  • color and pattern will not match standard
  • application will look uneven
  • lap marks will be visible
  • picture framing may be visible
  • finish will not touch up satisfactorily
  • film properties will not be attained
TOUCH-UP OR REPAIR
If possible, touch ups should be done by using the same application equipment, settings and technique that were originally used to spray the job. A mock up should be done first to insure that proper appearance can be achieved. If the mock up appearance is acceptable, a spot repair can be done using a feathering technique to blend in the touch up with the adjacent area. For best results, a corner-to-corner full coat application may be necessary.

TOPCOATING
In high traffic areas, harsh environments or areas subjected to repeated cleaning, a suitable clear topcoat is recommended. Such settings might include hospitality, healthcare, educational, office and manufacturing facilities. Use Multispec MCT Clear Waterborne Acrylic Polyurethane, or for higher performance applications, utilize a compatible, clear water white plural component epoxy or polyurethane.

COATING MAINTENANCE
Ultrafine may be washed with mild detergents and water. Overly aggressive cleaning and/or use of cleaning compounds containing coarse abrasives or harsh chemicals may lighten the color or alter the sheen of tinted Ultrafine. Always try specific cleaner and cleaning technique in an inconspicuous area prior to use.

ROLLER APPLICATION
Roller application of tinted Ultrafine is not recommended. Although untinted Colorspec bases can be rolled over white SE1 basecoat, tinted Colorspec should not be applied with a roller. Rolling tinted Ultrafine will lead to Tiger striping in overlap areas that will likely lead to an unacceptable finish. An example would be cut-in areas such as corners, window and door edges. After these areas are cut in and in a dried or semi-dried state, subsequent applications over these areas will be darker than the just-rolled adjacent area. A good analogy is that of staining wood. Overlap areas are generally darker and the final finish is uneven. While lack of uniformity may be acceptable for faux finishing applications, it is generally unacceptable for conventional wall finishing.

NOTE: For roller applications, use untinted Ultrafine or Multispec Watercolors applied with a Speckle Effects reticulated foam roller and rolling technique over SE1 basecoat.

For Multispec Watercolors with over 50% white background, use over untinted SE1 white basecoat. For Multispec Watercolors with a different predominant background color (over 50%), tint the SE1 basecoat to approximate the predominant background color.
