5. APPLICATION

Handling/Storage/Shipping:
Care must be exercised in handling. MULTICOLOR PAINT IS FRAGILE. Do not freeze, or store at over 100F. Close container tightly after each use. If container is not full, skinning can occur. Always remove skins before tinting and before using. Do not store in unlined metal containers.

Tinting: Multispec ULTRAFINE bases can be tinted with most universal colorants intended for use with waterbased architectural coating. Use a quart tint formula per gallon of ULTRAFINE to create colors that approximate tint-color standards. Multispec ULTRAFINE is intended for use with light to midtone colors only – deep tones or heavily pigmented colors tend to obscure flecks. Do not exceed one ounce of colorant per gallon of ULTRAFINE base.
Always produce sample sprayout for approval by specifier prior to tinting entire batch. Always box paint for the specific project before use. After adding colorant, agitate tinted multicolor on a gyroscopic mixer for one minute. Do not exceed three minutes. Multicolor paint is fragile. Vigorous agitation may break down color flecks and change color.

Surface Preparation and Priming: Surface must be clean, dry, flat and without defects. Prime with appropriate primer/sealer/stainkiller required for surface to be painted. For maximum stain blocking properties, a solventborne stain blocking primer is recommended. Follow primer manufacturer’s instructions for use. Use premium quality primer having good holdout and tooth. For hard, smooth surfaces, specific high performance primers are recommended. Undercoats that contain shellac, wax, silicones or stearates may not be suitable. When in doubt, check intercoat adhesion between primer and multicolor topcoat prior to proceeding with application. Do not prime with flat
wall paint. Alkaline materials such as cement, mortar, plaster and alkaline joint compounds will damage Multispec ULTRAFINE. Such surfaces must be properly prepared and sealed to protect the multicolor topcoat. Textured surfaces must be filled and primed.

Warning: If you scrape, sand or remove old paint, you may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC, EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE. ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH-approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to protect yourself and your family by contacting the National Lead Information Hotline a 1/800-424-LEAD or log on to www.epa.gov/lead.

Mixing: Prior to spraying, box, or mix gently with a paint paddle.

Reduction: When necessary, add water gradually in small increments (3 to 4 liquid ounces per addition not to exceed 10% in total) until an acceptable spray pattern is achieved. Too much water will cause paint to sag. Do not add thinners, reducers or solvents.

Equipment: Multispec ULTRAFINE was designed to be applied with airless spray equipment; and can be applied with conventional air spray equipment although fleck size will be larger. Sample sprayouts are sprayed with either a Graco 395 or Titan 440i airless units with a 519 spray tip @450-500 p.s.i. For specific equipment recommendations refer to Spray Equipment Guidelines and full specifications or contact Multispec representative or your local dealer.

Application Guidelines: Final finish may vary from standard due to variations in paint, substrate, equipment, pressure settings and technique. Note: Application must be full coat coverage. If not properly applied, the following will occur: uneven appearance, picture framing, lap marks, unsatisfactory touch up and diminished properties. Always evaluate color, pattern, and paint delivery rate on mock-up test area while using specific batch of paint with equipment selected for project, and be certain that mock-up meets with the approval of specifier prior to beginning project. Once approved, the mock-up should serve as the standard for the project. Color standards and film properties can only be attained when application is full coat coverage. Follow equipment manufacturer’s instructions for use and maintenance of equipment. Observe all warning statements relating to both paint and equipment.

• Avoid application during periods of high humidity and or when temperature of paint, surface or air is below 60º F or above 100º F.

• Apply tack coat to facilitate application, allow tack coat to flash prior to applying subsequent coats.

• Remove all filters and strainers from spray equipment.
• Do not use pressure pot agitator, siphon-type or gravity feed guns.
• Fast-drying paint may build up in the tip and reduce orifice size during spraying. Inspect and clean tip periodically.

One Step Application Technique: Set material and air pressure to match approved sprayout. Maintain uniform distance of 18-24” between the gun and surface. Aim spray gun directly at surface (spraying at an angle will distort pattern). Spray with horizontal strokes, overlapping each previous stroke by 50% and crosshatch the same area with vertical strokes to eliminate any lap marks and to achieve full coat coverage.

Topcoating: Not necessary in most applications. Can be topcoated to increase gloss and/or improve properties.

Touchup: Patch and/or prime when necessary. Select spray equipment and tip size and adjust pressure settings to be used. Utilize same equipment as used on original job. Do a mock-up to match original finish. For large areas, corner-to-corner touchup is recommended.

Cleanup: Immediately flush equipment thoroughly with warm water.

Precautions: DO NOT BREATHE SPRAY MIST.Wear an appropriate respirator (NIOSH/MSHA Approved), safety goggles and gloves. Use adequate ventilation. Avoid breathing dust when sanding. DO NOT TAKE INTERNALLY. KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF
CHILDREN.

HMIS Rating: Health, 1; Flammability, 0; Reactivity, 0; Personal Protection G.
